Holga and toy camera work

I have recently been using a Holga quite a bit. The uncontrollable nature of it is a nice contrast to the precision of my DSLR. Holga photography often has quirky focus, light leaks, and weird vignetting issues. And while I would never, ever, ever ever bring it as my only camera to a serious shoot, the results are on occasion pretty great. To be honest, more often, they’re crap. The gems are good enough to keep me coming back.

If you haven’t used one, you should give it a try. You can get one for about $30, and half the fun is taping it up so it doesn’t leak as much light, or wedging some cardboard under the film spool so there’s actually enough tension to get the image sort of in focus, or putting industrial strength velcro strips on the camera so the back will stop falling off and ruining your film. Maybe it takes a certain mindset to really love this camera. And by the end of this paragraph, you probably already know which side you’re on.
